Issue #1 - State's Rights vs. Federal Power
One of the key issues in this election in 1800 is the balance between central government and the states' power. Thomas Jefferson supports the states and believes they should have more power than they do now. He advocates for a weak central government because if they have too much power the U.S. can become a dictatorship and the people won't be valued. He wants to protect them and their rights. He firmly defends the right of people to rule the country and that others underestimate what they can do. Federalists, on the other hand, fight for a strong central government. They have little faith in the common person. Meanwhile Jefferson strongly disagrees with that statement, he firmly believes that people have the right to rule the country and they are underestimated. Would you rather vote for someone and party who do not want to giver you any rights or credit (Federalists)? Or a true American like Jefferson who believes in the people? Also, Federalists want to keep the government to have the majority of power and then balance the power between the "mass of people" and the wealthy citizens. That is not fair to the hardworking, loyal farmers and skilled workers who will not have a say in how their country is run. They have that right and Thomas Jefferson, if elected the United States third president, will ensure that they have what they have worked so hard for and deserve.
